In a historic move, Miami’s Latin Builders Association is backing Hillary Clinton.
The endorsement marks the first time the conservative-leaning, mostly Cuban-American organization has supported a Democrat for president, the Miami Herald reported.
The newspaper noted that the endorsement is a “double political rejection” for Republican nominee Donald Trump – from builders and from conservatives. In August, Trump spoke at a National Association of Home Builders conference in Miami Beach, where he focused on regulations, cost and other issues affecting the homebuilder industry.
Alex Lastra, president of the Latin Builders Association, said in a statement that the president should “possess the right temperament, sound judgment, knowledge of national and international issues and the ability to bring people together, regardless of party affiliation.”
It’s not the first time the organization, which calls itself the largest Hispanic construction group in the country, makes a statement against Trump. Last year, citing Trump’s “recent pattern of bigoted, sexist and ignorant verbal assaults on immigrants, women and veterans,” the LBA left Trump National Doral as the venue for its gala. (The PGA Tour also left Trump Doral, and took the tournament to Mexico City.)
The Doral-based group has more than 650 companies as members. [Miami Herald] – Katherine Kallergis
